Casement windows are a traditional type of window frequently found in older homes. These windows, instead of sliding open and closed, are more like little doors with glass panes: They are hinged and swing open and closed, just like a door. Although most casement windows simply swing inward in order to open them, some are opened outward by turning a crank on the inside, just below the window.

Casement windows are the oldest form of window that can be opened, and first appeared in the 15th century, when they were a feature of grand houses. Today, they are--with good reason--among the most popular forms of window, and can work well in both modern and traditional architectural styles.

Casement Windows

Pros - Casement windows open outward for light, fresh air and side breezes. They're tightly sealed for energy efficiency and great for hard-to-reach places, such as over sinks and appliances in the kitchen. Casements crank open, as opposed to sliding up and down, making them easier to maneuver.

Cons - If you're moving into an older home, check on the stability of your casement hinges and hardware. Though casements are usually tough to break into, faulty or rusty hardware increases your risk factor. Make sure to consult with a professional for replacement parts or quality new casements.
